DAY 6: A tour of Perth and Freemantle

Of course within one morning it is not possible to see everything, just the highlights, but after quite an early pick up from the hotel we set out with a very informed and chatty driver/guide to take in the sights and sounds of Perth and Freemantle.

Black swans near Perth

He was very keen on parks and taking smaller local roads so we probably saw and heard about some aspects of local life that others may have missed. We spent time in Kings Park with its informal botanical gardens and great views of the city of Perth and the Swan River, we were lucky enough to glimpse our first black swans and cygnets and drove through several parts of the old and new city and suburbs onto Freemantle where we had some free time for a coffee, also an almond croissant in my case, and brief walk around the old town.

On our return to Perth we had an iced tea sitting overlooking the old port of Perth, now the ferry and trip boat terminal, then walked back along the river to our hotel a pleasant breeze making it seem much cooler than the reported 32C. Across the river and inland some miles away from the city, a growing column and spreading cloud of smoke indicated a bush fire had begun but apparently they have not in recent history reached this part of the city, only affecting the outmost suburbs!

  1. The column of smoke is still visible now as sunset approaches. Lesley now appears to have some of the symptoms I had whilst in Dubai which we thought was food poisoning; evidently not! Have managed to postpone tomorrow's Wave Rock Tour (http://www.australianpinnacletours.com.au/full-day-tours/1-day-wave-rock-york-wildflowers-aboriginal-culture) to their next available date, Friday and extend our stay here at Goodearth by one night. Have also let the timeshare apartment in Dunsborough (http://www.wyndhamap.com/wps/wcm/connect/Wyndham/home/Resorts/Australia/WA/Dunsborough) know we will be arriving a day later. Everyone has been very helpful. Poor Lesley, hope she does not feel as bad as I did it was rotten!
