Slept well, woke to bright sunshine and blue skies, the norm in this part of Australia at this time of year apparently, breakfast and off to Busselton, a local town with the Southern Hemisphere's longest wooden pile pier begun on the mid 19C which we just had to walk. We chose not to venture down into the underwater observatory but enjoyed the views of the beach and surrounding sea from some 1.7km out in the sea! Amazing to think of the feats of engineering and tenacity of pioneer builders who wanted to ensure ships of increasing size were able to dock at the pier and bring much needed supplies and mail and eventually passengers who enjoyed the pleasures of a seaside town including swimming as well as shipping out huge quantities of timber, the main industry if the area at that time.
Enjoyed chatting to local Australians at lunch on the promenade and visiting the old Courthouse now an art gallery but with the old buildings including the cells and police station restored with amazing wood block floors that look like tiles! A wander through the town brought us upon Woolworths, which has disappeared from the UK but here in Oz thrives as a general purpose store with lots of tasty food and friendly locals keen to chat as we waited to pay.
Returned to resort for Lesley to do some much needed washing, tea on the balcony followed by email and other e-communication and eventually a glass of local sparkling wine and dinner.
