DAY 29: End of the road

I had a great night's sleep and awoke refreshed to sunshine and blue skies. We enjoyed a light but delicious breakfast with the balcony doors folded back and the sound of the waves crashing on the beach, repacked things into cases then left our apartment in Lorne to continue our journey on the GOR.

We passed a number of beautiful beaches clearly used by surfers, went through Torquay, signed as the surfers paradise and onto Geelong where we stopped for a quick walk around the town and a tasty lunch at the Sailors' Rest Cafe overlooking the bay. We had tried to find a winery to taste the cooler climate Victorian wines but failed to find any, hence our time in Geelong.

We then motored on towards Melbourne, the traffic grew thicker, more lanes on the road than we had encountered for some time and there ahead of us was the skyline of CBD, Melbourne. Over the River bridge, past the container and cruise ship terminals and into the city itself. It was rather a shock after having travelled roads with few cars passing us for several days but our Tom Tom accurately pilots us to the correct address and we arrived at our friend Carmel's house in the Balwyn North District.

We took a tour of the house, designed and built to Carmel and David's specifications, it had many interesting spaces, a huge wine cellar, a very large kitchen, dining room and lounge area with a balcony overlooking hills and gardens.

After a refreshing cup of tea on the balcony we left for the Botanic Gardens and a picnic. Carmel had put together a lovely aray of foods that we all very tasty and we chatted, ate and enjoyed the surrounding trees, plants and city skyline till the sun was set then we made our way back to the house and enjoyed further exchanges about family, the various works of art that adorn the house and finalised plans for tomorrow.
