DAY 26: Fire and brimstone

The day dawned bright and sunny following the best night's sleep I have had so far on this journey. The breakfast provisions at Robe were plentiful and after telling the owners what a wonderful place we thought they had created we spent a little time visiting the local bays and headlands and were fortunate enough to spot a wallaby hopping away through the bushes on a headland. We think it was a walleroo, was smaller than a kangaroo and a deep rich brown colour.

The next part of the journey took us away from the sea through cereal and grazing land with low hills to our left and the occasional vineyard, near to Coonawarra, onto Mount Gambier where we found the bluest of lakes fed by an aquifer into the crater of a dormant volcano. Nearby were 3 further lakes including Valley where we had a picnic, again within the crater of a dormant volcano, surrounded by birds including black swans and the largest of Moorhens we have ever seen and several species of duck and an unusually large number of Couts who were not afraid of humans, as at home, but flocked whenever humans came near, expecting to be fed! Fortunately the volcano remained dormant during our picnic but we were very aware that this was one of the youngest volcanos in Australia having last erupted only 5000 - 6000 years ago!

Our journey continued with the Grampians to our left, the unseen sea to our right and more cereal and grazing land and pine forests galore. We passed through Kilarney and eventually arrived in Warrnambool an old spa town from the late 1890's and to our apartment in Quality Suites Deep Blue.

There was a partial sea view from our balcony but we were keen to go for a walk only to find that the restaurant was going to close an hour earlier than we had been told so we opted for dinner first then a walk, though by now the sun had set. The beaches and sea looked beautiful and apparently there are penguins on the island just off the beach, protected by dogs as too many predators have been wiping out the penguins to a point of near extinction! We returned to the resort and made use of their free wifi in the lobby and chatted to Amanda in Dublin whose rehearsals are going well with an opening night in Stoke in a couple of weeks.
