We made an early, for me anyway, start at 0640 for the drive to Perth Domestic Airport for the flight to Alice Springs. We had checked in online last night and had printed boarding cards and the baggage drop was automated via use of self service kiosks that produced a baggage claim slip and labels and a conveyor belt that sent our two cases into the bowels of the airport, hopefully to emerge at Alice Springs and not Darwin, the ultimate destination of our plane. Everything worked smoothly, no one appeared worried about taking liquids on board flights, no passport check because we were flying internal I suppose and folk arriving and departing seemed to come in and out of the same gates with baggage being deposited in a public area.
Anyway, the flight was quick, a simple sandwich lunch was provided inflight and after snoozing we were arriving at Alice. Disembarking the plane we were met by the heat, even the wind was hot, though not as bad as I recall when arriving in Phoenix some years ago, there my breath was taken away by the heat.
We strolled though the arrival/departure area to the baggage claim, purchased transfer to the town tickets and were whisked away to our hotel, the Ibis Styles. I have to say our upgraded superior room looked like something out of the 1970s but it was clean, the air conditioning worked and there was a toilet and shower with hot water and even a kettle and tea bags.
After resting and cooling we ventured into town which was given high praise in the local tourist pamphlet for the diversity of shopping and cultural experiences on offer, but not after 1900 of course, through there were a number of bars and restaurants open. We ate in Stumps and I had kangaroo. It was okay but the fillet steak I had the other night was more tender and tastier! We shared an Australian gelato as we walked back to the hotel. Night all!
