DAY 15: Trees, trees and more trees!

Our day began earlier than usual with a breakfast that included an Australian delicacy, a veggiemite danish pastry! Well it looked like a cross between a Danish and a Chelsea bun and was quite tasty but a shock as I thought it was a sweet bun not savoury. My understanding of the Australian language was also further enhanced whilst listening to the car radio when one of the presenters was heard to say, "how d'ya be?" There was no "mate" at the end but one can get the meaning, I think.

Anyway, we had decided whilst in Oz to take the opportunity to experience unique things, the veggiemite danish was by accident, but visiting the Valley of the Giants and Tree Top Walk was planned. The Red Tingle Tree is considered pre-historic and specimens can grow to over 70 Mtrs. The only examples of this tree in the world exist in a forest between Walpole and Denmark some 280 Km from our resort but we are never going to see these trees anywhere else in the world so we went. The route was through some of the most heavily forested land we had yet encountered in Australia. Wherever we looked there were trees and in one small town a timber museum. It was a bit overcast today but the smells from the trees were amazing and hugging a red tingle was a must.

The tree top walk is a suspended walkway some 40 Mtrs above ground high up in the tree canopy. It felt very strange being at the same height as some of the trees and looking down to the ground below was a bit scary but I seem to be getting more of a head for heights, coupled it seems with improved balance.

The journey each way took some 4 hours but the roads were good, we hardly saw any vehicles in either direction but did catch sight of a Joey hopping across the road ahead of us near dusk and a field full of roos grazing.

On our return we went via Busselton and bought take away special fried rice and spring rolls and had a mini feast at the apartment with the remains of the sparkling dry white wine we had in the fridge. A fitting end to a long but lovely day, oh and the sun came our just in time to see it setting!
