DAY 8: Swanning about on the river!

According to Flanders and Swann (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flanders_and_Swann), the comic duo of the 1950s-1960s, there is nothing quite like messing about on the river and we are a stone's throw away from the Swan (no pun intended) River and as the weather was sunny with a bit of a breeze we took ourselves down to the Captain Cook Tours kiosk in Perth and purchased two return tickets.

We sat outside on the upper deck but shaded from direct sun and enjoyed a little over an hour's cruise downstream to Freemantle with a commentary, that may have been quite informative had we been able to hear it, and generally enjoyed the breeze and gliding along swiftly towards the Indian Ocean.

On arrival at Freemantle we wandered through the port to the Round House, the oldest surviving building erected in 1831 by convicts to act as a prison! Fascinating place, ironic that the first permanent building erected by the State was a prison! Caught a glimpse of a three masted wool ship that is still in sail and made our way to the fishing harbour to sample the local fish and chips, Greek style, at an establishment run by one of the oldest fishing families in Freemantle, Kailis. I am not so certain it was the best ever fish and chips, the honour of which probably goes to an establishment in Whitby (Yorks.) or Brixham (Devon) but the batter was light and crispy and fish succulent and those on display as fresh as could be!

To aid the digestion we wandered around the town and back to the harbour for our return journey which seemed quicker, maybe it was with the tide, though the free samples of local wine may have helped, and arrived back in time to take a short tour on a couple of the CAT buses through and around the city before returning to our apartment for a rest.

Lesley has been fine all day so I think we can say she is over the sickness but I had to keep prodding her during the return journey so she did not doze off as she needs to sleep tonight as we have an early morning tomorrow and Friday with quite long tours ahead of us.
