DAY 16: Final day in WA

Having had a long drive yesterday we began our final day in WA in leisurely fashion with brunch on the balcony followed by various administrative tasks to ensure smooth onwards travel via Perth to Alice Springs and our long weekend in and around Uluru, which forms the focus of the next stage of our journey around Oz.

Yesterday's drive also depleted the fuel tank so we found a local garage that provided petrol at $153.9 AUS instead of $161.3 AUS just a few miles away in Dunsborough - no idea why there should be such a difference in price but we experience similar things back in the UK and I wonder why anyone buys fuel at the more expensive stations when cheaper ones are often on the same road!

A little food shopping in Woolworths, yes that will be a surprise to our UK friends and family, but unfortunately I did not have a loyalty card so was not able to pick up any Quantas points. On the radio we heard that the Parliament had descended into 'juvenility', we appreciated the sentiment but had never heard the word before so must be another Australianism! Like the comment made by the person who served us our gourmet cheese and meat platter and local wine at Flametree Winery when we told her we were going to see a film at an outdoor cinema, she suggested we may need to 'rug up'! Again, we think the meaning was clear but we had never heard that expression either, so we have begun compiling a list on our phones for future reference and of course for impressing our Australian friends by greeting and conversing with them in their own language! The sheep's cheese on our platter from Cambray was luscious and rather like a Greek yogurt but the Brie was unlike any we had tasted before. It had a sharpness like feta and was salty, much preferred to either French or British. The prosciutto was also very soft, juicy and flavoursome and alongside my Shiraz and Lesley's Savignon Semillion we had a tasty treat for afternoon tea!

Packing, as we have an early start in the morning, was followed by a trip to the outdoor cinema at Caves House Hotel in Yallingup to see The Railway Man with Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman. Enjoyed the film, very moving, the environment in which we watched it though was as intriguing; open to the sky, a nearly full moon, twinkling stars and a cricket chirping in my right ear during the first 15 minutes or so! We had packed a supper to eat before the film but were still full of cheese so post film we went to a nearby parking spot overlooking Yallingup Bay for a moonlit feast under bright stars with the sound oft the waves breaking on the shore below. Wonderful! A lovely way to complete our visit to WA.
