I slept well, but Lesley less so as it was quite sticky and she found it hard to get to sleep. We breakfasted al fresco, readied the van and ourselves and left for the journey North towards Innisfail, which probably ought to be in Scotland.
As we left the campsite we sighted two large birds of prey and stopped to take some photos of one of them swooping and rising in the wind. As we drove the clouds grew greyer. We stopped for refreshments, to shop for dinner and fill with diesel near Townsville then continued on our way and before long the mountain ranges to the West were covered by low flying clouds and then it rained. We had to slow down both for numerous road works and the rain which eventually gave way to darkness despite it being mid afternoon!
We stopped for lunch, eaten in the van as it started to rain again, then continued on our way eventually arriving at the Flying Fish Point Tourist Park about 1730. On entering the town we noted a sign indicating the location of a cyclone shelter and wondered whether we were being wise given the weather encountered during our drive. However, it was another delightful site with individual bays lined by palms, hard standings, water and electric points at each place. This was our most expensive site at $36 AUS but handy for our onward journey tomorrow to Cairns and situated in a delightful bay.
Between showers we walked to the beach where a sign warned users of the presence of marine stingers, unpatrolled area and crocodiles! There was no evidence of the latter, the tide was in, there was very little beach, the water was brown, choppy and uninviting and the grey clouds were back so we made a hasty retreat back to the van just as heavy rain began to fall once more.
Safe in the van we began to pack, used the free wifi (but it was limited and gave up before we had both used it), cooked a pork and prawn fried rice meal followed by sticky toffee pudding (they were small) then went to bed.
