DAY 45: is it really time to get up?

After such a restless night neither Lesley nor I were keen to get up but many things await us along the coast towards Cairns so we dragged ourselves out of bed. After showering, I went into the local town, just a short walk from the campsite, to purchase fresh bread and rolls. After a tasty breakfast, including a fresh fruit platter reminding us of our time with John & Gennelle, we readied the van, emptying and filling as necessary and left to drive along the Capricorn Coast towards Mackay.

We only caught glimpses of the sea and beach as we drove through the region because the main highway turns inland before Torilla Peninsula as much of it is a military training area and closed to the public. However, the countryside was interesting with more elderly volcanic plugs, verdant bush and those strange cattle we now believe to be called Brahman. Sadly, there were a number of wild animals lying dead at the side of the road, mostly young kangaroos and a few possums, but kites wheeling overhead were at least getting a feed along with a large number of other carrion feeders.

We stopped briefly at Marlborough for a refreshment break under the shade of some trees, the external temperature guage in the van registering a rather warm 33C. We also filled with diesel, having used more over past two days as we employed the air conditioning unit in the cab and were soon on our way towards Mackay.

Having decided we want to try and see a Platypus or two in the wild, we are planning to visit the Eungella National Park, so decided to make our overnight stop at Sarina. After shopping once more in Woolworths, and gaining more air miles with Qantas, we pulled into the Tropicana Tourist Park and what a sight met our eyes!

The campsite was indeed a tropical paradise with palms and brightly coloured flowers everywhere and nestling in between were the pitches. We chose one near the top end of the site which was quite small and explored our new one night home. It was delightful and the piece de resistance must be the hand basin in the gents toilet being used as a water lilly display!

Having arrived early we caught up on emails, reading, photo editing and blogging. Lesley cooked a tasty feast which looked glorious and we finished off the very luscious Shiraz we purchased in Tamborine Mountain with some cheese and biscuits.

Being very tired Lesley turned in just after 8 pm. Early to bed, early to rise, maybe I'll get tea in bed in the morning!
