Well, at the end of today we will be half way through our 70 day tour and ejoyed a healthy breakfast on the patio, overlooking the bush, surrounded by bird song. Our own chatter joined that of the birds and after a few chores, we were off to explore the Gold Coast and in particular Surfers Paradise and environs.
The sun came out and was present for much of the time which was just as well since Lesley, Gennelle and I paddled in the Pacific Ocean which was warm but caught us unawares and both Lesley and I ended up with damp bottoms!
Despite it being a weekday there were quite a few folk on the beach, several swimming and a few on boards but I was surprised at the number who seemed to be ignoring the 'safe flags' and swimming outside of these thus putting themselves at risk. A lifeguard did at one point drive his buggy down to the water's edge and require everyone in the water to move between the flags to avoid danger.
Interesting to note that in just 100 years this bay has developed from a series of beaches with a few shacks backed by bush to a modern, high rise metropolis with a complex canal system and expensive houses. Lesley and I had our photograph taken under the Surfer's Paradise Arch then we motored on to Marina Mirage for lunch; we each had a tasty salad and John and I sampled a local brew. As always the service was excellent and we had a view over the marina and were sheltered from the odd shower of rain.
After lunch we went on to the end of 'The Spit' where we spotted a couple of porpoise in the water and a rather foolish person who ignoring the signs was paddling a board across the mouth of The Spit and got caught in the strong tide that was taking him out towards the sea! He did manage to land himself on the opposite bank but John began to wonder whether he should get his mobile phone out ready to call for the emergency services.
Back at home we enjoyed a cup of afternoon tea, listened to music on the Bain's Ultrahigh Fidelity Audio System, chatted and edited photos.
