My youngest daughter is currently in The Falklands (or Islas Malvinas if you prefer) for a year (her second tour there). We did not really ever think we would visit but we did over Xmas & New Year and what an interesting place. It's a bit of a time warp really - a mend and make do society with (it seems) few natural resources - no trees to speak of - lots of water surrounding a myriad of islands with about 2500 Falklanders mostly congregated on the Eastern Falklands with the majority around Port Stanley.
A generally friendly people visited by thousands of people from the tour ships that regularly dock in the deep water harbour in the summer months - 2 ships carrying over 4500 passengers docked early in the New Year for example.
We penguin watched at very close quarters - see Flickr photos and some short videos - sat for ages near to brown browed albatross keeping their fluffy chicks warm - were amused at the antics of King Cormorants squabbling over the bracken - were stared at by sealions sunning themselves on the rocks and hiding from the roaring wind in grass tussocks. A truly amazing place - take cash and cheques in sterling - when driving or being driven expect a bumpy ride as there are few proper roads. Take plenty of clothes you can layer even in summer including hats, scarves and gloves - be relaxed and enjoy!
